Helping to rejuvenate brain function

3 min read

The brain is like a computer that regulates the functions of the body and the nervous system, a network that sends information to the parts of the body, according to the educational portal KidsHealth.

In addition, the US National Library of Medicine MedlinePlus explained that the brain is made up of more than a billion neurons. Some specific groups of them work together to give the ability to reason, experience feelings and understand the world. They also help remember varying amounts of information.

To take care of the brain, you must have a balanced and healthy diet through fruits, vegetables, fats, proteins and carbohydrates, but it is also important to take vitamins for its proper functioning, such as vitamin D, since the lack of this in the brain “affects multiple brain processes, including cognitive functioning both in people without chronic pathologies and in subjects suffering from neuropsychiatric diseases,” as explained on its website by the Ibero-American Nutrition Foundation.

In addition, it is important to use medicinal plants that help rejuvenate brain function, such as centella asiatica, since, according to The Tampa Herald, “it is essential to combat premature aging, poor memory and lack of concentration.”

Harvard University recommends the consumption of rosemary, as Uma Naidoo, a nutritional psychiatrist at the University and an expert on the brain, pointed out, according to the media, that research on the plant “supports the numerous antioxidant and protective properties of the brain.”

He also added: “Research on the therapeutic effects of rosemary suggests that the use of the herb and its extracts may help relieve pain (analgesia) while acting as a tonic for the nervous system, relieving symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety”.

It is recommended to eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains, choose low-fat sources of protein, such as fish, beans and skinless chicken meat. He also noted that alcohol can cause confusion and memory loss, just like drug use. Other recommended foods are: mango, grapes, bananas, pears, legumes such as lentils, nuts such as cashews, Swiss chard, dairy products, among others.

To improve memory and take care of the brain, you should exercise at least 30 minutes a day, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), as this increases blood flow to the entire body, including the brain, and helps keep memory active. To the same extent as the body, the mind must also be exercised with activities such as crossword puzzles, playing bridge, taking different paths when driving, playing an instrument, among others in order to stimulate the brain and keep it in shape.

Another suggestion is to socialize regularly, as this prevents depression and stress, which can contribute to memory loss.

Along the same lines, it is advisable to organize, since writing down appointments, tasks or events will help them to remember more easily. Also, Mayo Clinic recommends avoiding distractions and not doing too many things at once. “If you focus on the information you’re trying to retain, you’re more likely to remember it later. It can also be helpful to relate what you’re trying to retain to a favorite song or other familiar concept.”

Another recommendation is to ask yourself questions whose answers must be investigated, such as, what is the capital of a country, how long do ants live, what was the first song by an artist, among others.
